PHOTOS: one of Hungary’s most astonishing luxury castle hotels close
Kastélyhotel Sasvár (Castle Hotel Sasvár) looks like the place of the king and the queen from our childhood fairy tales. “Whereever the king was the guest, the guest is the king today”, sounded their motto. Now they have to close because of the soaring energy and utility prices. The only good news is that the closure is temporary. The hotel may reopen in December.
The management is unable to deal with the energy prices
Kastélyhotel Sasvár has been functioning as a mansion hotel since 1996. Now, the skyrocketing energy prices will result in its temporary closure. The hotel’s management said they would do everything possible to remain open. However, after calculating the incomes and expenditures, they decided to close between 1 November and 1 December, sokszinuvidek.24.hu writes.
They said the reason is the “horrific gas and electricity prices.” They added they would like to save December in that respect and would notice their guests booking rooms for November an email soon. However, they will not be able to save the staff. Some members will leave to work somewhere else because of the temporary closure.
András Szélessy, the director of the luxury hotel, added that, based on the guests’ opinions, Hungary’s best hotel was to close.
Elegance and luxury everywhere
The mansion hotel in Parádsasvár is close to Hungary’s highest peak, Kékes (1014m). Its wellness facility includes specialities like a Kneipp stomper, panoramic jacuzzi, steam cabins, tepidarium, salt therapy cabin, Finnish sauna, infrared sauna, beer sauna and hay sauna. Guests can play billiards and tennis and use the trampoline. Inside, they can play X-box and use the 4K car simulator. Furthermore, there is also a cinema corner.

Here is their history
“If you like our history, be our guest”, writes the hotel’s webpage. Below you may read the history of the land and building without a change.
The land between Kápolna and Parádsasvár was the property of the Debrői family at the time when the Magyars settled in Hungary. During the history of the manor the property changed hands several times. Many noble families including the Rákóczi, Orczy and the Grassalkovich families lived here. The first bathhouse of the estate was built in 1827. The land became the property of the Károlyi family in 1846. Ybl Miklos had the castle designed and built for György Károlyi between 1876-82. György Károlyi intended the castle for his wife Karolin Zichy, who was in exile with Lajos Kossuth during the works.
After the emigration, she lived in the castle between 1893-1903, and she gave the name Sasvár to the castle. Later György Karolyi’s grandson, Mihály became the owner of the manor. He was a townsman and he didn’t like the landlords’ life, but his wife Katinka Andrássy, the Red Countess, loved the rural way of life. At that time the casle was called „Sulky”, because the countess was hiding here when she got across with her husband. Károlyi had tenants, who utilized parts of the property as a hotel. After the Soviet Republic the government has stolen the property from the Károlyi family. They got the castle back only for 2 years after the end of the Second World War. At the time of socialism it was used as a holiday house for children. Over the past decade it was privatized again. The building and the park was purchased in 1996, and after the renovation it is open to travelers since 1998.
„Where ever the king was the guest, the guest is the king today.”
As we reported before, the popular Hotel Lövér in Sopron, West Hungary also closes, but forever.
